Talking Pineapples Don’t Have Sleeves, and Our Students Don’t Stand a Chance

When I first read about this outrageous reading prompt and its even more absurd questions, my first thought was, “At least it’s in New York. We wouldn’t see a travesty like that on the STAAR in Texas.” Lo and behold, our pals at Pearson came up with this gem and used it in at least three other states before New Yorkers saw it on their 8th grade state assessment. Unbelievable. The state of New York has a $32 million contract with Pearson to develop the state assessment, and this is what they got for their money:

Here is what the author of the original story has to say about selling the rights of his story to a testing company:

And a link to the story on New York 1:

Our students are tortured by high stakes state assessments in Texas. They spend hours in tutorials after school to prepare for the tests. Their parents shell out hundreds to send them to private tutors. Teachers spend their lunch breaks tutoring and prepping kids for the test instead of eating. The kids spend four straight hours in a silent room and can’t even leave the room or go home when they finish. They have to sit there in silence, worrying about whether they passed or not while their peers finish the exam. If this kind of garbage is what the kids see on a test, then no amount of intervention and tutoring can help our students.
